Psyllium – The inside story
For over 70 years, Psyllium Husk (pronounced 'Silly-Um') has been the primary source of both soluble and insoluble fibre in Metamucil. Cultivated from the seeds of the Plantago Ovata plant, it has a long history of use in traditional and herbal medicines. Today, you can enjoy the 100% natural cleansing benefits of psyllium in a convenient powdered or capsule form.
What is Psyllium?
Besides Plantago Ovata, psyllium is also known as ispaghula and isapgol. Plantago ovata is an annual herb native to Asia, the Mediterranean region, and North Africa. Psyllium grows in sandy and silty soils, and is extensively cultivated in India and Pakistan. India provides about 85 percent of the psyllium available in the world market, and it has been used in traditional medicine in the United States, Europe, India, and China.
Psyllium is a bulk-forming fibre. Other fibres that belong to the class of bulk-forming fibres are cellulose, methylcellulose, carboxymethylcellulose sodium, karaya, malt soup extract, polycarbophil, and wheat bran. They exert their action primarily through mechanical effects by absorbing water, bulking the colonic contents and decreasing transit time.
